The primary responsibility of the CFD includes the responsibilities of preservation of life and property from fire, but it is also responsible for the response and mitigation of hazardous materials and the delivery of Emergency Medical Service. The Chicago Fire Department operates the largest totally Advanced Life Support ambulance system in the world. The fire department also responds to many other non-fire emergency responses.
